Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is the successor to the WES7 (Windows Embedded Standard 7) and WE8S (Window Embedded 8 Standard) operating systems.
The products under the banner of Windows Embedded have a long history of deployment outside of the traditional desktop, laptop and personal computer. They are well known to power checkout tills in supermarkets, kiosks, advertising displays and public information displays.
When they don’t use Windows Embedded and its advanced lockdown features you can end up with a visible outcome like this if the system fails.
Business / Home versions of Windows 10
So lets me start with giving an overview of the variants in which Windows 10 is available for business use. As a point of reference, for regular home and a lot of business PC/Laptops they are just using CB (explained below).
The 3 variants for business installations are:-
- CB (Current Branch)
- CBB (Current Branch for Business)
- LTSB (Long Term Servicing Branch)
So what are they?
Variants included: Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro, and Windows 10 Enterprise
This is the least flexible branch of the three. It requires Windows users to take any new features, fixes and security updates that Microsoft pushes to them via Windows Update. No choice or option to be more flexible.
Current Branch for Business
Variants included: Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise
This is a more flexible branch than the Current Branch when it comes to choosing and scheduling updates.
Users who are running Windows on the CBB will have a choice of how they get these updates – whether via Windows Update for Business or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
Windows Update for Business is being rolled out with Windows 10 to allow businesses some flexibility with how they roll out updates.
Long Term Servicing Branch
Variants included: Windows 10 Enterprise
The Long Term Servicing Branch has the most flexibility of all. Most popular for true vertical market application and devices (Point of Sale, Industrial Devices etc.)
This option allows users to refuse everything but security updates. So it appropriately reserved for the highest specification version of Windows – Enterprise.
As in CBB this branch allows users to also just take security fixes and defer taking any new features and to handle them via Windows Update for Business and/or WSUS.
Windows 10 IoT versions
So what is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise?
In short, it is the same full Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB desktop operating system with a special license for the OEMs in an embedded market. Plus with the major advantage of long term support, which is always a requirement in IoT and the Embedded Systems market.
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB also includes the usual lockdown features that have been in previous Embedded Standard operating systems like:-
- Unified Write Filter
- Shell Launcher
- Write Filters (EWF/FBWF/UWF)
- Keyboard Filter
- Gesture Filter
- App Locker and Layout Control
- Dialog Box and Notification Filter
Please note: Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB is supported on Microsoft’s Long Term Service Branch and excludes “universal apps” (including the edge browser) for enhanced stability.
So why would the “Bill of Materials” (BOM) be affected by Windows 10 IoT Enterprise?
Since August 2016 Microsoft have created three levels of licensing which can save up to 75% on a per unit license cost. They are called “Entry”, “Value”, and “High End”
What are they and what do you save?
Target – Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB for lower performance processors: Intel Atom, Celeron (N3160, N3060, N3010, N2930, N2807, J1900) etc.
License cost – 75% cost reduction
Target – Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB for medium performance processors: Intel Core i3, Core i5, & Core M etc.
License cost -50% cost reduction
Target – Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB for high performance processors: Intel® Core i7 & Xeon etc.
Licences may only be purchased from us with suitable Direct Insight hardware, such as a processor board or industrial PC. So we’d be happy to provide and work with customers to port Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB when required for many of our embedded boards and Panel PCs.
